Parlez-vous français?
As I mentioned in a past post, I feel like the luckiest ladybug on the branch to have gotten a job at my current place of employment. I basically like all my coworkers (some more than others; I admit, I have a few favourites), the work is not overly complicated (yet), and getting to work close to home is a treat. Not to mention that I get to speak English more or less all the time – 100% English with my coworkers, and I’d say about 85% English with the customers (that’s a big deal in Quebec, you guys). This is convenient for me, but is doing nothing to improve my French. As such, when customers speak to me in French, it still trips me up. Just a bit. Continue reading →

Un mois à Montréal
So, I have officially been living in Montreal for one month and five days today. That’s pretty cool. I haven’t run out of money yet, and no one’s tried to mug or rape me, so I can say that my first month has been a success. I’ve thought to myself a few times that my first month hasn’t been super eventful; there have been several days where I haven’t even left my apartment. But if I break it down and look at exactly what I’ve accomplished here in that short amount of time, it’s kind of amazing. To have accomplished a comparable number of things in Regina probably would’ve taken months, if not a year. It might not seem like a lot to other people, but for someone like me, it’s not a bad little list. Let’s take a look at what I managed to get done in July (and those first few days of August). First time for everything: Just For Laughs Gala
For those of you out there who may not know me very well, know this: I. Love. Stand-up comedy. Back in Regina, there were a few different shows (with the same ten comedians) I could go to to fill the comedy shaped hole in my soul. And there was nothing wrong with that. I saw some funny shows and made some friends and acquaintances. But for most of my life, I have been watching Just for Laughs on TV (granted, the same ten episodes), just waiting for the day when I would get my chance to go. And yesterday, my friends, was that day. It was easily, easily, the best day I’ve had in Montreal so far. Continue reading →
In through the nose, out through the mouth
A few days ago, I found myself having a bit of a panic attack. Because of my history with anxiety and depression, this was neither unexpected, nor unmanageable. I talked to my mom on Facebook to try to calm myself down (it worked), and she recommended I explore my feelings through a blog post. So, since the internet is the best place to engage in self-indulgent analysis, let’s see if I can’t break down whatever problems I think I have and why they’re actually non-problems that I’m blowing out of proportion. First time for everything: Getting a haircut
You guys, I have a really bad case of the only-had-one-hairdresser-my-whole-life-itis. Basically, for as long as I’ve been getting my hair cut, my family and I have dutifully gone to our hairdresser in Regina. When she changed salons, so did we. And when she started working from home, by golly, we followed her there, too. She isn’t the world’s best hairdresser; I’ve only ever gotten maybe two or three haircuts from her where I’ve been like, “Yeah, I feel like a movie star right now.” Still, she always made me look presentable, and she doesn’t charge much. But she’s in Regina, and I’m in Montreal. This morning I woke up and my hair was completely un-make-look-goodable. I knew it was time for a haircut. Continue reading →
First time for everything: Completely and utterly fucking up supper
You know how yesterday I was on top of the world after successfully making a plate of spaghetti? Like, that was the highlight of my week. I felt invincible. Unstoppable. That meal tasted like victory. It was basically the complete and utter opposite of my supper tonight, which tasted like sadness, anger, and defeat. Continue reading →
First time for everything: Cooking supper
Disclaimer: This is not my first ever time cooking supper ever, you guys. I’m turning twenty-two this year. That would be ridiculous.
I’ve been living in Montreal for a week and a half now, and today was the first day where I really cooked myself supper. I mean, yes, I made myself fancy scrambled eggs a few days ago, but fancy scrambled eggs are one of my specialties (sad, I know) and I’ve made them a gajillion times back home, so they don’t count. No no, today was my first time making myself a supper that I’ve never had before. And that supper? Spaghetti. Continue reading →
Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal
Saturday, I went to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (or the Musée des beaux-arts for all my fellow French speakers). Now, I know what you may be thinking, imagined audience: “Really, Katy? You bitched and moaned about the Art Institute and the AGO, and now one of your first actions upon arriving in Montreal is to go to an art gallery? Girl, you crazy.” And you’d be right, supposed readers. But let me explain. Art galleries aren’t nearly as dreary when you’re by yourself and get to set the pace; I was under no obligation to look at crazy Picasso paintings for half an hour longer than I wanted. And it’s free, so that’s a bonus. I’m thinking I’ll be willing to check out most things in Montreal if I don’t have to pay for them. Continue reading →
I can’t hug you if I’m holding chicken
Today marks one week of my living in Montreal. And, I still mostly feel like a tourist on an extended vacation here. I think that since my parents left on Thursday, it’s starting to sink in a little more, but not quite. Anyway, I’ve been doing too much to write about it in tons of detail, so I’ll just try to sum the past week as briefly as possible (for me, that means it will still probably be fairly long, but deal with it).
